The Ronald Reagan Building hosts “China Earthquake School Rebuilding Fundraising Reception” organized by the China Society and the World Trade Center Association’s Committee on Peace and Stability Through Trade

Washington, D.C. June 4, 2008—Helping to rebuild some of the thousands of schools destroyed in the recent China earthquake is the focus of a fundraiser to be held at the Ronald Reagan Center in Washington, D.C. later this month. The event is organized by the China Society and the World Trade Center Association’s Committee on Peace and Stability Through Trade, and takes place on June 26, 2008. The Maryland-China Business Council, Union of Chinese American Professional Organizations, National Association of Asian American Professionals, Organization of Chinese Americans DC Chapter, AA United Foundation, Asian Fortune News, and United Press International Foundation are partnering organizations.

The earthquake occurred on May 12 2008 in the Southwest Chinese province of Sichuan. The quake, with a magnitude of 8.0 on the Richter scale, devastated the mountainous area around Chengdung, killing more than 68,000 people. Over 10,000 of those dead were students and teachers, crushed when their schools caved in. More than 7000 schools were seriously damaged. Ten million people have been directly affected, four million homes destroyed, and sixty thousand people hospitalized. Five million people are homeless.

To aid school rebuilding in the devastated area, the China Society and the World Trade Center Association’s Committee on Peace and Stability Through Trade will organize a fundraising campaign and an evening reception with light food, a cultural performance and auction at the Ronald Reagan Building. All proceeds will support school rebuilding through the China Red Cross and/or trusted local partners. On-line donations can be made at www.thechinasociety.org. Donors are encouraged to engage in long term follow up.
